Holiday Happenings in Vicksburg
Historic downtown Vicksburg is glittering with the magical glow of thousands of tiny holiday lights and sparkling decorations. The holiday season kicks off on Saturday, December 2nd with the arrival of the jolly old man himself, Santa Clause, at Downtown Vicksburg’s Christmas Parade of Lights along Washington Street beginning at 5:00 p.m. This year’s theme is “Home for the Holidays.”
Santa will also be making a landing at the Southern Heritage Air Foundation Museum just across the river at the Vicksburg-Tallulah Regional Airport earlier that morning. Pajamas, Pancakes and Planes is from 8:00 until 9:30 a.m. Take I-20 West to exit 182 (Mound, LA) and let the kids romp through the hangar and enjoy breakfast with Santa. Be sure to have your Christmas photo taken with Santa taken!
Before heading downtown for the parade, you will want to stop by the Holly Days Arts and Craft Show at the Southern Culture Heritage Center. The show opens at 9:00 a.m. and closes at 3:00 p.m. The auditorium will be packed with artists and crafters from throughout the region and great live entertainment. Admission $1. Goldie’s Express will be there serving their delicious barbeque. Don’t forget that downtown merchants will be open on Sundays in December from 1:00 until 5:00 p.m.
Tour homes throughout the city are bedecked in yuletide splendor. You can relax and enjoy the elegance of homes that were built by Vicksburg’s wealthiest families of the 1800s. Most of our tour homes also operate as bed and breakfast inns. Stop by and take a tour, or, better yet, check in for the night and enjoy a gracious plantation breakfast.
Children’s Charity Night at the Beechwood begins at 6:00 p.m. on Thursday, December 7th. The evening includes a live auction and live entertainment featuring a who’s who of Vicksburg musicians. All proceeds benefit Rainbow Farms Therapeutic Riding and Jacob’s Ladder Learning Center. December 7th is also the opening date for the Parkside Playhouse production of The Trial of Ebenezer Scrooge. The show begins at 7:00 p.m. and runs through December 10th. Sunday matinee starts at 2:00 p.m.
The 16th Annual Breakfast with Santa and Magical Adventures in Candyland will be presented by the very creative team at the Vicksburg Convention Center on Saturday, December 9th from 8:00 – 10:00 a.m. You can purchase a raffle ticket for a chance to win a Christmas bag stuffed with toys and electronics. The kids will love their adventures in a life-sized candy land.
The evening of December 9th Society Historica presents the Confederate Christmas Ball at the Balfour House (circa 1835). The evening is based on the grand Christmas ball hosted by the Balfour family on the night of December 24, 1862. The Confederate Ball is from 7:30 until 9:30 p.m. Tickets must be purchased in advance and attendance is limited.
